It's that time of the month again for the new releases show on New Sounds, despite the fact that it's All Hallows' Eve. John Schaefer carefully sorts through the stacks, bins, downloads and boatloads of new releases which have come across his desk over the past month to present some of the finest (and scariest) new releases. He'll pick the lentils from the ashes to present the cream of this crop. We’ll start off with 3 contrasting covers—Piers Faccini and Vincent Segal cover a tune made famous by Mississippi John Hurt as well as a much older Neapolitan song while the Rob Garcia 4 play their take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.” Tamar Osborn’s Afro jazz septet Collocutor plays “Archaic Morning,” the Valentina Fortunati Trio (made up of guitar, sax/flute, and percussion) play a lovely “Dusan Lullaby,” and the Turtle Island Quartet plays a tune by violinist and founding member David Balakrishnan’s “Guruvayoor,” which fuses Indian sitar sounds, jazz, and Appalachian music.
So Percussion premiered Bobby Previte’s five-movement “Terminals” at a New Sounds Live concert in 2011. They recently took it to the studio, and tonight’s edition of New Sounds brings you a piece of that brand new record. The first movement features Zeena Parkins on electric harp along with So Percussion on steel drums and a processed vibraphone.
